Patience…or lack thereof

Why is this taking so long? I workout everyday. I burn calories. I eat healthily. I run half-marathons, I lift weights. Why don’t I see the results of my hard work? Why is is taking three months to lose five pounds? Why don’t I see the definition in my arms that I am working so hard to achieve? These are all questions I ask myself and you probably ask yourself too and for good reason because when you think you are working really hard, you expect the results  to reflect your hard work, that’s how it’s supposed to work!

Well, it turns out that it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of time for you to see the fruits of your labor when it comes to working out, be it for losing weight or for toning and sculpting. If you are trying to lose weight, you have to realize that 3500 calories equals 1 pound of fat, so you have to create a deficit of 3500 calories just to lose a pound a week. 3500 calories!!! Can you believe that. You don’t realize how hard that is until you start to log your food and calories burned and realize how fast the calories you consume add up. It takes no time at all to consume 3500 calories which is why it is so easy to gain weight if you’re not eating properly or exercising.

When I started exercising, I was pumped up and ready to bust my butt and start seeing results right away. Imagine my disappointment when I would see no difference in my body after a couple of weeks. Other factors that can contribute to the lack of results are:

  • incorrect form when working out, form is more important than how fast you do a workout so if you are not doing the exercises correctly, you will not see the results you are looking for;
  • not burning enough fat which can cause the muscle to form on top of the fat, this is especially true with abs where you kill yourself doing crunches and still don’t have a flat tummy;
  • hormonal changes that come with the natural process of *cough* aging, these hormones almost work against you to circumvent all your hard work.

The phrase Rome was not built in a day applies to your body as well. It will take you several months of hard work and dedication for you start to see results but it will definitely happen. It was very discouraging for me when I didn’t get my desired results right away and it took all the motivation and drive in me to keep waking up in the morning to exercise. I would stand in front of the mirror staring as hard as I could at my body trying to see if that was some definition I saw or just a shadow.

This is why being fit and healthy has to be a lifestyle change. If you are only working out and eating healthily halfheartedly, you will be very quickly discouraged when you don’t see results immediately. However, if being fit and healthy is your lifestyle, then you are in it for the long haul and the results will come.

Patience is a virtue, owned by angels, for the rest of us we want what we want yesterday! When it comes to seeing results on our bodies, we all have to try to be like angels and eventually healthy and fit looking angels 🙂

  1. Needed the encouragement. Like you say Rome wasn’t built in a day.
    It is so weird how easily the pounds add on then become a headache to ‘move out’

    It is true we should look at form when working out, making sure you are exercising right!

  2. My boyfriend in the army always tells me I’m not working out right, and when I do take his correction I actually do feel the impact of the exercise to see improving results.
    so definitely agree with your first point.
