Pencil Skirts— I love them but….

Have you ever loved something even though they cause you pain? No, I’m not talking about that boyfriend you know you should break up with but never seem to be able to. I am talking about clothes and shoes and for the purposes of this article, specifically, pencil skirts.

20180319_055525Pencil skirts are one of the most elegant pieces of clothing in my opinion. Paired with the right top and heels, they always make you look professional and chic at the same time when worn to work or any other business event. Want to wear a pencil skirt out to dinner, or out for drinks or dancing? Yes, they work for that too! They can be casual, professional, chic, sexy, do I need to add more adjectives? Pencils skirts are awesome! They come in various colors, styles and lengths, with a slit, without a slit. You can probably tell that I love them.I wear them a lot to work and have also worn them a number of times on a night out and when bodysuits made their way back into the world of fashion, well, it was a match made in heaven. Bodysuits provide a more streamlined look to the pencil skirt I was very happy to discover!

Well, as I mentioned earlier, I love pencil skirts but they cause me pain. Not a physical pain per se but a pain nonetheless. I am referring to the tendency for pencil skirts to ride up your hips when you walk and the apparent power struggle it seems to want to engage in with you. You pull it down, it rides up, you pull it down, it rides up higher..ughh! If you are thinking, “well maybe your skirt is too tight”, you are wrong! it happens with tight skirts and loose skirts and all the way to the knee skirts and just above the knee skirts, why, why, why! Now, I have to admit that some skirts do this more than others. I’ve discovered that the ones that have a bit of spandex in them ride up a lot less and also if it has a bit of a slit in the front that helps too so I gravitate towards those styles more than the others.

20180220_060150I have a bit of a ..ahem..bigger behind, so maybe that contributes to the riding up as well but I have seen ladies who are a bit less blessed in that area have the same issue as well so I don’t know.  I have resigned myself to the fact that this is another one of the sufferings I have to go through for fashion, so when I decide to wear a pencil skirt I am prepared for the power struggle because it is worth it to me. I almost always pair my pencil skirts with a pair of heels and a body suit. The overall look is slimming and flattering. A dress shirt pairs well with it as well, just make sure it is a well fitted shirt to avoid the bunching up of the shirt when tucked inside the skirt because then you have a second power struggle and who needs that? You can also add a well fitted blazer to complete the ensemble.

I purchase my pencils skirts from, (White House Black Market), and as this is where I have found skirts that fit me the best and as you know by now, I am an avid online shopper. If you do not own a pencil skirt, go to your favorite clothing store and try one on, you will love it I promise!

  1. You are a girl after my own heart. I love pencil skirts and as you say they are right for every occasion. I can’t believe that there are people who don’t own one. You’d better go get one and you would ask yourself where you’ve been.
