I don’t have time. My schedule is packed. I don’t feel well. It’s too hot. It’s too cold. Its my birthday. It’s too expensive. I’ll do it tomorrow………these and many many others are what we use to talk ourselves out of making the effort to be fit and healthy. There’s always something standing in the way of working out and eating healthy it seems but I have one word for this…Excuses!
Making the decision to workout and be healthy is not an easy one. Working out, if you’re doing it right, hurts because you are making your muscles work in ways they may not be accustomed to, or you are pushing them past their limit. Eating healthy is hard, the best tasting food is usually not healthy, if you have a choice between french fries and carrot sticks, of course french fries will win if you have no will power. To add insult to injury, losing weight takes a long time, in spite of what you may have heard, there is no quick way to lose weight that is also healthy and sustainable in the long run. It could take you years to reach your goal weight and this is with consistency and a complete lifestyle change. So of course it is simpler to take the easy way out and succumb to excuses.
I wake up at 4 a.m. to exercise every day during the week and at 6 a.m on Saturdays because as I talked about in my “Make your workout fit” post, this is the only way I can make my workout fit into my life. Exercising and being healthy has become a part of me, it is part of my routine, part of my life. I workout and eat healthy because I hold on to my motivation for being fit and healthy. I accept that I have to put in the work to see results and I am doing this for me, so I can feel good about myself and love myself.
My routine may not work out for you so you have to find one that works for you. If you accept that being healthy is hard work and that you will for sure see results if you put in the effort, you will come to realize that it doesn’t matter if it’s too cold or too hot because nothing will stand in the way of your motivation to achieve your goal.
A lifestyle change to be fit and healthy means that no matter where you are or what you are doing you maintain this lifestyle. I workout even when I’m on vacation, I make sure to book a hotel that has a fitness center so I can put in 30 mins of exercise before starting my day. Maybe you’re a swimmer and you can swim a few laps before heading out for the day. Going on vacation doesn’t mean putting your lifestyle change on hold.
I watch what I eat no matter where I go. I scan the menu for healthier options, and yes I do cheat sometimes or splurge on something decadent or have a drink or two but the important thing is to not overdo it and derail your lifestyle change. This means that if I have something decadent for lunch then I will have something healthy for dinner or vice versa. It’s about balance and control. I have learned how to make healthy food taste just as good as non-healthy food by making substitutions and finding alternative ways to cook them. It’s actually fun to find different ways to cook something.
No more Excuses! Say this to yourself over and over until you believe it to be true. Only you stand in the way of your health. You are doing this for yourself. If you can make time to watch a TV show then you can make time for a 30 minute workout. We make time for so many things in our lives but push our health and fitness to the back burner because it’s too much work. I hope this blog changes your mindset, starting today and you become someone with No Excuses!
