I’ve mentioned before that I decided a few years ago to make a lifestyle change to become more healthy. This came with a lot of sacrifices, as I had to give up a lot of my favorite food, like sour cream for example. Who doesn’t love a nice generous helping of sour cream on their baked potato, I mean, seriously.
My solution for this dilemma was to do a lot of research on substituting healthy ingredients into my favorite recipes in the hopes that I would still end up with a yummy dish, but one that was healthy and guilt-free. This is where Greek Yogurt comes in.
Greek Yogurt has a lot of health benefits. Please note that I’m referring to plain, non-fat Greek yogurt. Like all yogurts it is an excellent source of Calcium, Potassium and Vitamins B12 and B6 but Greek yogurt has twice the amount of Protein and additionally it has a thick creamy texture that makes it an excellent substitution for otherwise fatty ingredients. My favorite brand is Stonyfield Organic Plain Greek Yogurt.
Greek Yogurt can be used instead of sour cream, I add a teaspoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, a pinch of salt and black pepper which is delicious with baked potatoes and tacos or pretty much any dish that would normally call for sour cream. When baking it can be used in place of heavy cream but it has to be thinned out with whole milk to give it the same consistency as heavy cream. I also use Greek Yogurt to make cream based salad dressings like ranch, simply substitute the mayonnaise or sour cream in your favorite ranch dressing recipe. Delicious and guilt-free! Doesn’t get any better than that.
